In the Name of Love

“if anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple”(Luke 14:26)

during the homily yesterday, father mentioned that ‘hating’ is a pretty strong word to use especially if it came out from our Lord Jesus. he just wanted us to really try to understand the message behind it.  Jesus didnt want us to hate them literally. He just wanted to stress & emphasis on the importance of putting him first above all things. as long as anything or anyone has power to draw us away from Him, He is not our priority. these other things may attract our feelings, capture  our imagination and arouse our unreasoning desires, but they have no real power over us until they influence our will.

it is not wrong to love people and to desire the good things which will improve our earthly life. in fact since these are all reflections of God’s goodness, they should be loved and desired. it is only wrong if we love them more than they deserve.

we ought to prove our preference by striving to please Him. we will give Him more of our time and attention. we will seek to come closer to Him by praying, reflecting, meditating and spiritual guidance. God wants us to live an orderly life, placing first thing first. only then can we say that we love Him above anything else even if its our own family…
